Standing at the 50 at the new Ryan Field this afternoon, I watched adversity show up for Rutgers on the opening drive when starting quarterback Dylan Lonergan went down with an injury.

Sitting in my hotel room before the game, I heard my son’s middle school flag team lost on a failed two-point try. Another reminder that sports are one of the world’s greatest teachers.

Watching Oregon lose, Aidan Chiles thrive, and BYU go down reminded me of something else.

Adversity doesn’t keep a schedule. It shows up when it shows up.

How you respond is what matters.

Flying home from a noon Eastern kick as Northwestern became bowl eligible in their win over Rutgers, I’m reminded that life after playing still brings adversity. In our professions. In our homes. In our hearts.

And just like it did for the Ducks, Chiles, and the #2 ranked Cougars, it never arrives on a timeline we choose.

So for all of us no longer playing, the gridiron left us some lessons this weekend. If you need them, this newsletter is for you.

That’s the first line I tell Elite 11 quarterbacks every summer.

This past weekend, our NBC crew stood at the 50 as Michigan State hosted Northwestern in a Big Ten clash full of drama, talent and growing programs.

The headline was Spartans head coach Pat Fitzgerald facing his former team, now led by David Braun, the man he once hired as the Wildcats’ defensive coordinator.

The subtitle was Aidan Chiles returning to East Lansing, where he was a two-time captain.

The game went back and forth. With 65 seconds remaining, Chiles had the ball, 80 yards from the end zone. After my partner, Paul Burmeister, and I called the game-winning drive, that line hit me once again.

The only guarantee is that your journey will not go as you imagine.

Chiles began his career at Oregon State, followed Jonathan Smith to Michigan State, and is now learning Chip Kelly’s system while leading a ranked Northwestern team. I asked him this week if he ever could have imagined that. As you’d guess, he told me, “no chance.”

Flying home on a Saturday night for the first time this fall, I’m watching games and seeing that line play out again and again.

From Ann Arbor to Austin. Bloomington to Knoxville. Pasadena to Eugene.

It’s simply a fact.

What intrigues me most is how Bryce Underwood and Arch Manning respond, how Julian Sayin recovers and how Dante Moore supports.

I was there with the NBC crew and, pre-game, was right in the thick of the student section. The only word I can use to attempt to share what it was like is that the White Out is a spectacle.

The choreography, the passion, the excitement, the sheer volume of noise, let alone people…folks, it is 1 of 1. And I am so grateful to have been there.

Watching the game play out from the sideline, and having watched every snap of USC football since 2005, I left Beaver Stadium thinking this was the most well-coached game of Lincoln Riley’s USC tenure.

From clutch audibles, clock management, variance in his playcalling, the discipline of his team…it all stood out. Earlier in the week I asked Lincoln Riley what his team needed to do to win in this environment. Without flinching he said, “Poise.”

They had that, and heading into their bye week, the Trojans have a chance to take the next step.

Speaking of steps, how about UCLA football? They seem to be skipping them. A year ago they fired their head coach, OC and DC before October, and now they’re being talked about as a CFP team…I’m not sure they will be that in Bob Chesney’s first year, but he has the Bruins playing like the Trojans used to under Pete Carroll. Run game, physical defense and winning in the margins. The Crosstown Rivalry has a chance to be the most meaningful one in nearly 20 years.

As I fly back to the West Coast, I find myself reflecting on how fast the season has gone by, and how seasons start to blend into one another.

It’s like Ferris Bueller said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

This past weekend my Dad was able to join me in Happy Valley. His first White Out as well. Post-game we visited a tailgate, saw some dear friends and drove home to Dalton, PA. We arrived back in the town I grew up in around 3am, exhausted and elated. Spent and completely full.

I felt like I needed time with him, and as a father, I’m sure he felt similar.

At 18 years old I left this town, began a life and have rarely returned home. In fact, this weekend’s walk around the town of 1,415 people was the first time I’d been there since 2020.

That was when my Mom died.

And this past weekend, I had something I hadn’t had in about 15 years.

A weekend at home during the season.

So today’s newsletter from the sky isn’t from the sky. It’s completely grounded. But man, what a weekend. And what a way to see college football.

It started with film. All week looking diving into Northwestern, Penn State, Washington, Iowa, Michigan State, Wisconsin, UCLA, Nebraska and more. Teams we may be broadcasting at NBC over the next few weeks. A chance to look back, spot some trends and lay the groundwork for the second half of the season.

Then on Friday night, like the rest of the country, I was able to watch Chip Kelly put on an absolute offensive clinic against Penn State as Northwestern opened one of the great stadiums of our lifetimes. Even through a television, you could feel it. The atmosphere. The electricity. The pageantry. Marvelous. Shout out to their AD, Mark Jackson, for leading the way and completing the vision.

Same for the Pitt Panthers. We got a huge one against Virginia Tech, and my Panther text thread was popping off.

Then Saturday came, and I got to do something else I haven’t done since becoming a father.

Watch my kids play sports in the season.

Our oldest had a basketball game that happened to line up with halftime of Michigan and Minnesota. It was perfect timing. Zayn had a couple buckets, a few steals and some nice rebounds. And I got some guy time with our youngest, Makaiye, watching his big brother compete. We were a two-person ‘student section’ and it was amazing.

Then home for more games before loading up the car and heading to the Coliseum, as a pseudo fan for the first time in a long time.

USC, backs against the wall. Washington, backs also against the wall.

I was there with our oldest, his buddy Kingsley and his dad James. We visited the NBC truck, then went down to the field. Ran into Malcolm Smith, Taylor Mays, Pat Chun and many others. My past and my present colliding. Players I coached at USC 20 years ago. Friends I've made in this industry. Coaches getting ready for their clash.

And for the first time ever, I got to be my son’s tour guide at the Coliseum.

It went back and forth all night. As the sun set and the heat broke, the crowd kept filing in. By the fourth quarter, I looked up and the Coliseum was nearly full. Washington seemed to have control. Then USC did exactly what Lincoln Riley described after the game. They dug deep and found out what they were made of. A sack, a forced fumble, a return for a touchdown and a stop on the final play.

The Trojans got a much-needed victory…and I’d imagine an extremely long exhale.

One of my greatest mentors in life, Kevin Carroll, asked me a question a decade ago: “Yogi, are you always in Beta?” Over a coffee in Portland, he shared his rationale. If your life was an app, are you always updating it? Are you always working on your craft? And when you get your shot, will you be ready to take it?

Eileen Gu took that a step further this past week when she said, “I train like I’ve never won and I compete like I’ve never lost.”

I thought a lot about that on Saturday while calling Notre Dame at Purdue on NBC, and I witnessed it while watching incredible finishes late on the East Coast.

The big picture in college football yesterday was that road teams had the composure to win, and win late. The Ducks winning late vs USC, Iowa winning on the literal final snap, Boise State dominating Western Michigan, Nebraska winning in East Lansing, UCLA running away with a win against Maryland, P.J. Fleck’s Gophers winning late at Washington, and more.

While flying back West, my mind keeps going to that quote: “I train like I’ve never won and compete like I’ve never lost.”

That’s the mentality Iowa’s offense had to have with two seconds left to win in the Big House. That’s the approach Drake Lindsey had to have across the country in Husky Stadium. And that’s how the entire Oregon team had to walk into the Coliseum last night against USC.

Which leads me to Dylan Raiola. Since he arrived in Eugene, he’s seemingly been in Beta, working on his craft and preparing for if and when his name was called.

I have a soft spot for QBs, especially 5-Star QBs. It led to authoring the book with Joey Roberts. My favorite line in the book is from Chip Kelly. He wrote, “It doesn’t matter if the virtual world is criticizing you or praising you. Praise and blame are all the same. That door swings both ways. Better to keep it closed.”

It’s easier said than done.

Dylan Raiola arrived at Nebraska with acclaim and expectations. Praise came from everywhere, and when things were challenging, blame did as well. It’s part of the deal when you play QB in any era, let alone the NIL one.

I’d argue it’s even harder now than before. While the bank account grows, the capacity to manage pressure may not. In fact, sometimes QBs need to take a break, or a breath, more than anything.

After being injured against USC last fall, Raiola got that. In the months that passed, he found himself in a new environment in Eugene, and as we’ve shared here dozens of times, Dan Lanning front-loads the principles of his program: Connection, Growth, Toughness and Sacrifice. Last night, those were tested, and on display.

Look, managing adversity is what college football is all about. And ironically, so is life.

As I land in LA, I find myself smiling wide at what Dylan Raiola has had to navigate, and that when his name was called, he didn’t flinch.

And I’d bet he’s navigating praise in a newfound way this Sunday. As he should.

For the teams that lost this weekend, it’s all about recovery. Mentally, emotionally and physically. After being on the road for the past nine weeks, it’s the same on this end. Which is why we’ve loved partnering with Recovery for Athletes here at . Recovery for Athletes is the #1 online retailer for athlete recovery and wellness products, and they have it all. From saunas and cold plunges to nutritional supplements and fitness equipment, they’re the one-stop shop for all the best brands in the game. Lastly, calling Notre Dame vs. Purdue felt no different than the 200+ games I’ve called in the past, but the lead-up and postgame are always different when calling an ND game.

As a kid, I was a massive ND fan and like many high school athletes in Pennsylvania, dreamt of playing in that stadium. So much so that in every high school game, I wore a Ron Powlus summer camp t-shirt under my pads.

Seeing Ron in pregame brought me right back to being a kid in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Growing up there, most football fans had two choices: Penn State or Notre Dame. So hearing from so many old friends who I would play backyard football back in the 80s and 90s after the game was amazing. It served as a powerful reminder that sports are the ultimate connector in life. They allow bonds to be formed, conversations to be had and memories to be made.

Walking out of the broadcast booth yesterday I kept thinking that this years ND team is as complete as any they have had under Marcus Freeman and the expectations for them are legit.

With that said, we’re about to land, and I’m hoping to make some memories with our two sons today as we soak up some sunshine and sand on the final Sunday in September.

Time is flying. Thanks for the community here, and I hope your weekend was just as you envisioned it… and that you, too, are staying in Beta.

Much love and stay steady,

Yogi

We hear it all the time in sports.

There may be no greater illustration of it in college football than the Indiana Hoosiers.

That’s where I was Saturday, calling the game at Memorial Stadium, otherwise known as The Rock. Curt Cignetti is leading his team in year three, this time as the defending national champions. As we’ve talked about many times on the Y-Option podcast, IU is not going anywhere.

And neither are clichés. Dan Hicks and I joked this weekend in the booth that they’re clichés for a reason: they work! They’re also everywhere in sports, from the defending champs to my sons’ 11-year-old flag football team. And there is some truth to them on many levels. Some of my favorite Cignetti-isms:

• Fast, Physical, Relentless

• Each play has a Life and History of its own

• Stalking Complacency

• Production over Potential

• Humble and Hungry

• You get what you demand

Thinking back to my childhood, our dad had a few as well:

• Love many, trust few, and always be sure to paddle your own canoe

• Knowledge is no burden to carry

• A penny saved is a penny earned

You get it. Clichés often get an eye-roll, but they often leave an imprint.

Over the last few weeks, one word has left a major imprint on me: conviction. I’ve enjoyed asking coaches what they are most convicted about and how that has shown up on film and in the facility. It often leads to a conversation about what’s at their core as a leader. I’d bet it’s at their core as a husband, father and human as well.

Quarterbacks need to play with conviction too. Meeting Josh Hoover, then calling his game on NBC, confirmed that he has the tools and mentality to thrive for the Hoosiers. He wasn’t perfect, and he didn’t seem to meet his own standard or Coach Cignetti’s, but if I had to guess, he knew that walking off the field.

His head coach knew it too, but the way in which Coach Cignetti sets and upholds that standard is what has me inspired today. Many coaches who use that phrase can beat down their players and lead heavy-handed. Not Cignetti.

Rather, he maintains levity and builds confidence with the little things.

After the game, our sideline reporter, Caroline Pineda, asked him about his star quarterback. With a grin, he reminded her that everybody wants to talk about Josh, but there are 104 other players on that team.

It was a great reminder for all of us.

Chasing perfection is brutal and unrealistic. When that’s the goal, it can overwhelm all of us. But when the leader is in touch with reality while setting a standard, that is when potential can be maximized. Which is why I think Josh Hoover will thrive as a player this fall for IU.

Before I dive into preparation for Notre Dame at Purdue this weekend, I’m spending the day with my family, hitting the sauna and getting in three minutes in the cold plunge. It’s a huge part of my recovery, and it’s a reason we partnered with Recovery for Athletes here at Y-Option. Recovery for Athletes is the #1 online retailer for athlete recovery and wellness products, and they have it all. From saunas and cold plunges to nutritional supplements and fitness equipment, they’re the one-stop shop for all the best brands in the game. Speaking of home, today is a fun day as I turn 45. In our home there is a tradition, or standard, on birthdays. We go to the beach, paddle into a few waves, and then talk about the previous 365 days and set goals for the next 365.

I hope today’s newsletter serves as a reminder for all of us that standards are great, but if we don’t have joy, don’t have fun, and don’t celebrate with the people who matter most, we are missing the entire point.

Much love and stay steady,

Yogi

Todd Blackledge and I dove into the turnaround in Ann Arbor, the epic game in Austin and then took a deep dive into Cy-Hawk, the Oregon Ducks losing in Stillwater and looked ahead to Michigan State at Notre Dame and Western Kentucky visiting the defending champs, Indiana.

That’s how I felt, more than once, last night in Iowa City for Cy-Hawk, where Iowa State and Iowa clash every year. Walking out to the field for my pre-game hit on NBC, I started to look around.

First it was the intimacy of the setting, a field seemingly swallowed by fans, the sidelines tighter than I’ve ever seen. Then it was the children’s hospital overlooking Kinnick Stadium, where true competitors in life wave every home game. They inspire millions watching, and they draw inspiration right back from the players on the field.

Right before going on air, I looked up and a single butterfly floated by. Every butterfly does the same thing for me: it’s a reminder of my late Mom. She loved butterflies, she loved football, and in that moment I knew she had a great seat for the game too.

The game itself was back and forth, and in true Cy-Hawk fashion it came down to a game-winning field goal. Iowa returned the favor this year, beating the Cyclones and first-year head coach Jimmy Rogers in a thriller, 16-13.

Right before that kick, I looked around one more time. So many people, one setting, all connected by a shared love of football. It gave me chills. That’s the power of the game: it unites.

Flying home at 5am, my mind is all over the place. What’s up with Oregon? Can Michigan throw the ball well enough to win consistently? Is Washington in trouble? Is Boise State bound for the CFP? How legit is USC? How many losses will a CFP team be allowed? Are the top two teams in the country both sitting in the state of Indiana?

I’m not sure. But I can’t wait to dive into the film and find out.

Before I do that, I’m hitting the sauna and cold plunge. I’m thrilled to be partnering with Recovery for Athletes here at Y-Option, the #1 online retailer for athlete recovery and wellness products. From saunas and cold plunges to nutritional supplements and fitness equipment, they’re the one-stop shop for all the best brands in the game. When I’m traveling across the country, recovery comes before film study, every time. Be sure to check them out at RecoveryForAthletes.com.

But above all of it, I keep coming back to this: every athlete’s journey rarely goes as planned.

Traditionally, this newsletter lands on Sundays, flying home from a game, but this week is a little later so thank you for your patience.

Bottom line for me: week one was fascinating.

I stood in a booth on Thursday, in front of a near sellout in Minnesota, next to Jason Benetti. We watched Drake Lindsey, PJ Fleck, and this Minnesota team operate at an elite level. Keep an eye on the Gophers. They’ll be a sleeper all season long. They have a big time QB, possibly the top edge rusher in the nation with Anthony Smith and are extremely well coached.

From there, it was The Greatest Setting. You know what I’m talking about. Seattle, The Apple Cup, the re-launch of the Pac-12. Not just another iconic rivalry but the 118th version of Washington versus Washington State, a rivalry that began in the year 1900. Yet this was the first time it had ever been the opening weekend of the season. And it was incredible. Both defenses played well and while the dark horse CFP Dawgs didn’t look sharp, they still have the tools to take a run this fall.

That got me thinking. Very rarely in life do we get to do anything for the first time.

That’s why year one with a new coaching staff is so unique. From Jimmy Rogers this weekend at Iowa State to Kirby Moore this past weekend at Washington State to Bob Chesney, Lane Kiffin and so many teams across the country who hired a new head coach this past off-season. It presents a fresh set of eyes leading a team, a new voice at halftime pumping up the team (hello Lane) and for fans, hopefully we all get to re-set our expectations and re-create the hope we have in our favorite team.

If things didn’t go your way this past weekend that’s ok too - it’s ONLY 1 game. That’s the beauty of college football, growth happens in ways we rarely project. And adversity is where true culture and character are revealed so I’ll be glued to see what Rutgers, Cal, Stanford, Michigan (even in a win) and others who met adversity this coming weekend.

A huge part of coming back home after calling games is recovery and we are so proud to have a new partner here at Y-Option. We met the Recovery for Athletes team and after hearing that their mission is to help high performers be their best, and recover after a game or practice, we had to join forces. And if you follow me on Instagram, you know that cold plunges and saunas are my go to post game recovery move. If you’re traveling or competing, be sure to check out RecoveryForAthletes.com as they have kept me fresh after week 1 as the grind of the football season is real.

Welcome back to - where Todd Blackledge and I break down the biggest Week 2 college football storylines, including what happened at the Big House, whether Oregon fans should be concerned, how real Iowa’s offensive changes are, and what to watch in the Ohio State vs. Texas matchup.

Today’s podcast is fueled by our founding sponsor 76, keeping you on the GO GO GO so you never miss a beat. Hope you enjoy!

I was in the booth for USC’s opener against San Jose State. Yes, it was hot. So was Jayden Maiava as he played with elite command. The highly touted freshmen for the Trojans also met the moment. And one small detail stood out to me, worth flagging if you’re a special teams fan early in today’s show.

I also dove into Oregon’s game vs Boise State. I’m doubling down: the Ducks are one of the top two teams in the country as we approach week 1.

Speaking of top two, Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele and Nico Iamaleava are two of the best quarterbacks in the nation, and both play on the West Coast this Saturday night. That’s what makes Cal vs. UCLA a must-watch: two elite QBs and the debut for two new head coaches.

After calling Eastern Illinois at Minnesota Thursday night, I’m flying to Seattle to meet Paul Burmeister. We also bring you a preview of the Apple Cup live from the UW team room.

As always, each episode is fueled by our founding sponsor 76, keeping you on the GO GO GO so you never miss a beat.

We are hours from kick-off and college football will be officially underway. And thus, we will all either be right or absolutely wrong about our picks. And that’s the fun part, picking the sleepers and contenders. Todd Blackledge and I dive into those teams in advance of game 1 in today’s podcast, fueled by our founding sponsor 76, keeping you on the GO GO GO so you never miss a beat.

We tap into the reasons why Iowa, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Oregon, Ohio State, Minnesota, UCLA, Washington, Illinois, and USC could all challenge the way people are talking about them this season. We will explain what stood out in practice, which quarterbacks are ready to take a leap, why defensive depth matters, and how the Big Ten race could change once these teams get tested on the field.

Almost game time, set those DVRs!
