I have always liked Coach Riley. He's super smart and unbelievably dedicated to his job. The only problem? He's too good for his own good [translate into 'lacks killer instinct']. I remember him pretty much caressing Caleb on the bench when he was off his game. The more Caleb pouted and shook his head, the more solicitous Lincoln became. I couldn't help thinking of how differently McKay or Saban would have handled the situation. [In fact, watching Lincoln baby QB's on the sidelines always brings back cherished memories of a very famous trainer of a very successful fighter telling his guy in the corner, "Listen up! For the umpteenth time, if you don't slide right you're gonna get knocked out. Wake the fu*k up!"]. It doesn't make me happy to say any of this. I really want to see Coach Riley take USC to the playoffs....but, to do it, he needs to remember he's not the players' Mom.
